1000 CYCLISTS HEAD FOR CHARITY RIDE

North Down Cycling Club’s annual charity ride to raise funds for the Ulster Hospital’s Diabetes, Stroke and Cardiology units will take place on Sunday June 19. Now in its tenth year the ride has so far raised £50,000 for the hospital and with the PSNI having approved an increase in participants to one thousand, the total money raised should make this event one of the most successful charity rides in the country. Continued support from BikeIt Cycles, Grand Parade, Belfast and Ards Borough Council has been crucial in offsetting costs so that North Down can maximise the donation to the hospital.

The Committee meeting last night agreed the following issues: SATURDAY RIDES – the Saturday morning rides continue to attract the largest number of club riders. Due to the neccessity to ensure the safety of all riders and members of the public the Committee have agreed that each group must consist of no more than 20 riders i.e. the length of the group should be no longer than 10 bikes. The Portaferry run will leave first and should only contain riders who are capable of completing the full distance.

Others may have finished but that’s all who were recorded

Well at least it didn't rain! Everything else was thrown at the 37 soles who braved Kirkistown tonight. Heavy cross-winds made each of the straights a slog with the only relief a short stretch at the bottom of the track. The groups were well split up by the finish with a lot of drop-outs along the way. Matt Adair (Vitus Bikes)- cyclo-cross champion, and Matty Blayney escaped the scratch group early on and steamed through the middle group and the limit group within a few laps. No one was able to get on their wheels and they were well clear of the remaining scratch riders at the finish. Matty did not contest the sprint as Matt had done most of the work. Ross Blayney pipped Richard McCullough for 3rd. Attached are the results as far as can be determined.

Ras

Club President, Harry Adams, got a late call-up for The Ras.  Now I know Harry has been performing really well in the Over 50’s races, but he was called up to use his expertise on the massage table before and after each of the demanding stages of this year’s eight-day race.  Harry will be looking after one of the top teams in the race – Giant Asia – and it’s great that the expertise of this unassuming North Down man is being recognized at the highest level.
