Despite heavy rain we had 20 riders and 11 marshalls at the race tonight. A front group of 3 including Ian Blayney were given a 3 minute handicap over scratch. However, 30 seconds after they started the armada arrived – 10 of our sailing members, having been directed by Richard McCullough to the wrong starting point. He should know better – idiot! So they were waved on through into the race and scratch held for a further 2 minutes before getting underway. By the end of the first lap scratch had passed the fleet and made up 2.5 minutes on the 3 limit riders who continued to hold a 45 second lead at the end of the second lap. They were eventually caught at Hightrees. A2-up sprint saw Kieran McKenna of East Antrim edge out Richard McCluuough for the win. Full results:

Kirkistown
A record field of 60 riders took part in the final Kirkistown race of the season. Once again the weather was kind, with sunny but breezy conditions. A large group of club riders set off a lap up on the other two groups, but without proper organisation the group fragmented quite early on and was closed down by the chasing groups before half distance. The more experienced riders in the handicapped groups stayed and worked together eventually combining and leaving most of the club riders behind. Their pace averaged 26mph for the 50 minute race

Northern Ireland Road Race Championships

It was a  cold damp morning that heralded the start of August for the North Down road racers. However it was also the day of the Northern Ireland road race championships so there was work to be done.

Myself – William Barclay, Paul Ferguson, Noel "skipper" Boyce, Richard McCullough and Matthew Blayney took our places in our home from home – the club bus and made the short trip to Kilroot.

Conspicuous by his absence was club president/team masseur/driver/team manager, Harry Adams. We felt he'd earned a day off after his heroic efforts to keep us organised during the Portaferry 3 day so we granted him a day's holiday from this thankless task. (Just the one!)
