15 hardy souls braved the weather for tonights 10. They braved a deluge to get to the start and it was touch and go whether the weather would win. However, foolishness prevailed and the event went on. Conditions for the run were actually very good and no rain fell until the finish.

Nathan selected for UK School Games

For the first time ever, cycling will be part of the UK School Games this year and Saint Columbanus pupil, Nathan McLeer has been selected as part of the Northern Ireland cycling team. The event will take place in September on Cardiff’s indoor velodrome, where the British team prepared for the Beijing Olympics. This is a great honour for Nathan and an opportunity for him to rub shoulders with the star of the future.

Irish Record for Rachel

Last weekend the Cycling Ireland Track Commission ran a selection event in Dublin to pick a development team to compete in the Meadowbank Grand Prix in Edinburgh next month. The inclement weather did hamper the cyclists in their efforts, but an outstanding ride by North Down Cycling Club’s Rachel Mitchell saw her equal the standard set by Cycling Ireland for the 200m, recording the fastest time of the day with 14.60 sec, to put her name in the record books as the first holder of the Junior National Women’s Record.

 Gordons Have the Chemistry

North Down Cycling Club announced this week that they have linked up with Gordons, the High Street chain of pharmacists. When one hears of a cycling club linking up with a pharmacist, there may naturally be a number of questioning glances.

However, in a sport which is as physical as cycling and where crashes are common-place, there is a real need for first aid equipment in the form of plasters, dressings, bandages, sprays and creams. Mr Neil Gordon stated that he was very pleased to assist the club in this way and wished all its members every success in the future. Certainly, the North Down club is appreciative of the support of Gordons, but hopes that this is one item of support that it will rarely use.
